As far as WordPress themes go, the Genesis Framework is probably one of the most widely respected parent themes on the market. Boasting hundreds of thousands of happy customers, a loyal following of WordPress designers and developers, as well as some of the cleanest code around, it’s always an exciting time when a new Child Theme is released to the public.

StudioPress – the talented team of creators behind the Genesis Framework – release these Child Themes or ‘skins’ a few times per year. They can be used to complement the base design of the framework and allows users to create stunning designs for their websites, straight out of the box.

Today we’ll look at the popular Modern Studio Pro Child Theme. We’ll explore its functionality, how it looks and feels, as well as the potential for making it even better than it already is.

A theme with your content in mind

One of the first things you’ll notice about Modern Studio Pro, is the amount of white space on the page. This is a deliberate design feature that forces your content to take the centre stage.

No-one likes to read copy that’s crammed into a cluttered frame and the same can be said for images and videos. With a crisp, white background, plenty of space and sharp typography your content sits amidst a cool, calm simplicity that’s pleasing to the eye.

Color is another thing used sparingly in this Child Theme. The default accent color is kept to active links, underlines and button hovers. Black and white dominates throughout, ensuring your own imagery shines in all of its colorful glory.

Recent Posts Widget

This isn’t to say that you can’t introduce more color. If you’re savvy with a bit of CSS and the inspect element tool of your regular browser, changing the color of an element here and there, is fairly straight-forward.

Theme Menu

Another thing you’ll notice about Modern Studio Pro, is the clean menu layout and blog header. There’s no full-width headers here. Instead your logo nestles comfortably between a left and right navigation menu to keep things neat and proportional.

Key features & functionality

There are a number of features in this Child Theme that are worth inspecting in more detail. One of these features is the ‘Welcome’ widget area. Sitting above your main site content, it’s the ideal place for displaying a welcome note to your readers. However you’re not limited to this by any stretch. It’s just as easy to add an opt-in form, image or even a slider into this space. The only limit really is your creativity.

Similarly Modern Studio Pro includes an announcement area that displays as a sticky bar across the top of your website. As you scroll down the page the bar follows, ensuring readers will always have your announcement or promotion in full view.

Normally you’d have to add this functionality yourself via a plugin such as Hello Bar. With it already built in, there’s one less plugin cluttering up your install.

Further features include:

  • Customization options via the native WordPress customizer
  • The ability to upload a custom header (including PSD templates in the exact dimensions needed)
  • Custom background options
  • Compatibility with popular Genesis plugins including; Genesis Enews Extended, Simple Social Icons and Genesis Simple Share
  • A sophisticated, minimal design that can be used straight out of the box
  • Built using HTML5 and best coding practices
  • Includes Landing and Blog page templates
  • Classic Genesis custom widgets such as Genesis Featured Posts, Featured Pages and User Profile.
  • An after entry widget area, designed to perfectly capture leads with via a subscription form

Of course that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re already familiar with Genesis and can comfortably develop using the framework, then Modern Studio Pro has unlimited potential for the eager eye.

Who this Child Theme is aimed at, really depends on your level of proficiency and the amount of time you have on your hands.

Similarly designers and smaller businesses may find the image-friendly layout of this Child Theme particularly useful for sharing their latest work. Given that there is a full-width layout option included, there’s no reason why with a bit of thought Modern Studio Pro can’t be used in this way.

Developers on the other hand can certainly use the theme as a canvas to build additional functionality upon. It saves the time and hassle of starting from the base Genesis Sample theme, with many of the popular features needed for a website, already built in.
